The task force covers a 28 county area, encompassing 26,367 square miles. The area is primarily rural with approximately 500,000 citizens and 490,878 registered vehicles. Task Force personnel: Commander, Chief Investigator, Investigators, Legal Assistant/Crime Prevention/Public Awareness Coordinator and Texas Department of Public Safety CID Agent. South Plains Auto Theft Task Force has an active Crime Prevention/Public Awareness Program featuring HEAT (Help End Auto Theft), VIN Etching and programs available to local civic groups. Types of criminal investigations conducted by task force include theft rings, automobile, agricultural, heavy equipment and trailer thefts, 68-A inspections and automobile burglaries.
